Some water consumers in Miri have been experiencing some odour in the water supplied to their premises in the past few days. LAKU Management wishes to explain that we are trying out a new organic chemical to improve the water quality. Th  decision to carry out the trial was made after extensive lab tests and successful one month plant trial at a water treatment plant in West Malaysia. The lab test results indicate that the chemical can successfully remove the colour in Sg. Bakong water and produce water of much better quality.

The plant trial started on Monday (7/4/14) afternoon at around 3pm. The water produced is indeed of much better quality. Some consumers may have noticed that the water from the tap is clearer for the past few days.

In the past, when the water was not as clear, the chloramine that we dosed for disinfection purposes has to react with whatever that is left in the filtered water, resulting in more chlorine being used up, therefore less or no smell. With the clearer water, the chlorine and ammonia consumed during the process is less, resulting in the odour become noticeable by some consumers. This is confirmed by the higher monochloramine present in the water. The highest monochloramine recorded as of yesterday was 2.7mg/l whereas the normal level is 2.0mg/l or less. The WHO and Malaysian standard for monochloramine in drinking water is 3.0mg/l. Therefore, the monochloramine content in the water delivered to the consumers are still within the drinking water standard.

We have adjusted the dosage to reduce the monochloramine content to the normal level last night. However, there is still water with higher monochloramine content in the distribution pipelines and reservoirs. It is expected that the odour will go off within the next few days.

We wish to assure our consumers that the chemical that we are testing now is safe for treating drinking water. It has been approved for drinking water treatment by the National Science Foundation, (NSF) and plant trial has been done in West Malaysia also. In any plant trial, some fine tuning in the chemical dosing has to be carried out. The Chloramine dosing is the one the need to be fine tuned and we have done so. However, we have decided to suspend the trial immediately. As we are using mostly Sg. Bakong water now, consumers are expected to receive slightly discoloured water once we revert back to the previous chemicals.

LAKU Management sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused to the consumers affected by the odour problem.

Thank you.
